Meet Your NEW Miracle Hangover Cure!

Well, this is for all of my fellow lovers of all things alcoholic – a new miracle hangover cure!

It is, as usual, thanks to the masterminds at the “RocketNews24” website, where they have the news on a new miracle cure for hangovers, thanks to the always intelligent Japanese – and CLAMS!

Here is what RocketNews24 is reporting about a new canned miso soup from Japan. ”

Filled with the power of ornithine, an amino acid abundant in clams, this is a traditional hangover remedy from Japan, now packed in a can!”

besthangover cures

According to the article, the “Power of 70 Clams” instant miso soup series from Nagatanien has been around for years and is easily found…but now it’s being touted as a miracle hangover cure!

Japan hangover cure

“People in Japan know the easiest way to get a good dose of ornithine is with a serving of instant miso soup from Nagatanien. Ornithine has been known to reduce stress level, prevent fatigue and help improve the quality of sleep. Its biggest selling point, however, is the fact that it enhances liver function and helps to detoxify harmful substances—a fact that’s long been known in Japan, where they’ve been eating clams, one of nature’s most abundant sources of the amino acid, to help ease the severity of hangovers for centuries!”

new hangover cure

“At the top right of their soup-in-a-can is the company’s endorsement of their product as a hangover helper; a cute cartoon image of a person with a beer glass that says, “For the alcohol-loving you”. For best results, our “alcohol-loving” selves should have one of these before bed after a night of drinking to help improve and lengthen the quality of sleep while our livers do the heavy work of detoxification.”

As always, the brilliant minds at “RocketNews24” have the story, and you can read more – and see so many other great stories – by clicking on the website here:

Paul McCartney’s “Press To Play” Disaster! A Critical Re-examination!

“My Body Needs Attention My Mind Is In A Mess,
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.”

Paul McCartney Press song

Those Lyrics Say It All!

“Oklahoma was never like this” – OK then! And look at Paul in this studio photo: McCartney almost seems resigned to the disaster that was his album “Press To Play” – and why not? Here is what he said about the album at the time:

“When we started working on the record, Hugh came in one day and said he’d had a dream,” McCartney recalled when he visited New York in 1986. “He dreamed he woke up one morning and had made this really bad, syrupy album with me, an album he hated, and that it had blown his whole career. We took that as a little warning”.

paul-mccartney-press-to-play

Hugh’s Nightmare!

The “Hugh” that McCartney mentioned was Hugh Padgham, the Music Producer famous for recording with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Genesis, The Human League, The Police, and XTC – and he produced Paul McCartney’s solo album “Press To Play”…and as for his other celebrity Musicians, Phil Collins would be joined on “Press To Play” by Pete Townsend, raising the stakes even higher!

hugh_padgham press to play

What’s Up With “Press To Play?”

So what went wrong? Paul McCartney teams up with a big hit Producer, celebrity Musicians join in…and it results in one of the most neglected of all of Macca’s albums!

Just HOW bad is “Press To Play?” Or is it just another of those McCartney albums that critics had their knives out for? Time for a critical re-examination!

First, let’s set the stage in the world of Macca:

Paul McCartney Tug Of War

At this point in the mid-1980’s, McCartney was coming off of two BIG hit albums: 1982’s “Tug Of War” and “Pipes Of Peace” in 1983.

Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace

In 1984, McCartney made a movie, and released a soundtrack for – the critically panned effort “Give My Regards To Broad Street.” The film co-starred Ringo Starr, and the soundtrack album sold well, but the reviews were harsh…

As Roger Ebert said in his review:

“I think you can safely skip the movie and proceed directly to the sound track.”

Give My Regards To Broad Street

Time To “Press” On!

McCartney released music on a regular basis throughout the 70’s and into the 80’s, and so he pressed on from “Broad Street”, and began recording “Press to Play” in early 1985. In a bit of a twist, he co-wrote six of the songs with 10cc guitarist Eric Stewart, and it was in the early part of recording the album that he uttered his prescient comment:

“When we started working on the record, Hugh came in one day and said he’d had a dream,” McCartney recalled when he visited New York in 1986. “He dreamed he woke up one morning and had made this really bad, syrupy album with me, an album he hated, and that it had blown his whole career. We took that as a little warning”.

Did this nightmare come true? Is “Press To Play” a “bad, syrupy album?”

Press to Play album Paul McCartney

Perhaps the first warning sign came when the recording sessions lasted until the end of the year, with only one song from the recording sessions released – a song not even used on the album:

paul-mccartney-spies-like-us-parlophone

McCartney “Spies” A Movie!

“Spies Like Us” was recorded during the “Press” sessions, but wasn’t included on the finished album. Instead, it was released as a single, as well as the title track for the limp Chevy Chase / Dan Ackroyd comedy of the same name – but even though the movie bombed, the song was a top 10 hit, setting the stage for the release of “Press to Play” in 1986.

Paul McCartney Press song

Time To “Play” Some “Press!”

So here is what was finally released – ten songs that form the basis of “Press To Play.”

paul-mccartney-press-to-play

Like previous McCartney solo albums, it’s a beautifully produced album, with mid-tempo rockers, ballad and some experimental tracks as well, with the cover evoking a classic 40’s Hollywood picture of Paul and Linda.

Let’s begin by listening to the first song on the album:

Paul-McCartney-Stranglehold

“Stranglehold”!

Paul comes out rocking, with a tight, joyous song that has energy and rebellion and a catchy hook.

Here is the music video:

Paul McCartney Press To Play album review

First of all, that’s a fairly raucous music video for what is a classic Macca rocker – but it was the type of song he hadn’t been releasing much at the time…his previous big hits were pop-flavored, like “Say Say Say” and “Ebony & Ivory.”

“Good Times Coming / Feel The Sun”

Next up is a calypso bit called “Good Times Coming”, which segues into the catchy pop song “Feel The Sun.” Both songs last just over a minute or two, held together in an “Abbey Road” way. A nice “combo” that led into a song that is much derided:

Press to play album

“Talk More Talk”

“Talk” is a quirky song with spoken word passages and sound effects placed throughout…some fans hate this song, but I love the offbeat lyrics.

“Digital organ, finishing stretch
Instrumentation, analogGretsch
Not quite a thousand, lower than that
Possible bargain for listening at that

Talk, more talk, chat, more chat
Words of a feather are worn in a hat
Talk, more talk, chat, more chat
I’m happy to do it for you”

paul-mccartney-mini-cd-press-to-play-25.gif

“Footprints”

“Footprints” is a nice, melodic tune that evokes the story telling of “Eleanor Rigby”:

It’s Beautiful Outside, An Old Hand Gathers Wood,
Can He See Me Sitting Here? His Mind Is Somewhere Else.
His Friend Have Flown Away, He’s Left Out In The Cold.
He Won’t Sit By My Fire, He Says He Likes It In The Snow.
Where Footprints Never Go, He Likes It In The Snow.

paul mccartney only love remains

“Only Love Remains”

This is a classic McCartney love song, performed here with a simple piano..

Here is the video:

If anything, you can make the case that this is a slightly derivative song for Paul, a minor love song, but he comes right back with the first single from the album:

“Press”

“Press”, a slick up-tempo pop song, was released in July 1986 and went on to become the album’s sole top 30 hit.

Here is the music video:

Paul mccartney press album

This song is certainly as catchy as “Silly Love Songs”, a playful song that is easy to sing along to – but it barely registered on the charts, and nothing else from the album charted at all.

And as for the lyrics:

“Right There, That’s It. Yes. When You Feel The Stress
Don’t Just Stand There, Tell Me To Press.

You Can Give Me What I Want I Must Confess,
My Body Needs Attention My Mind Is In A Mess,
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.
Never Like This, It Was Never Like This,
Ever Like This, Say Was It Ever Like This?
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.
It Was Never Like This …”

If anyone has any idea why “Oklahoma was never like this”, please let me know!

The next three songs on the album – “Pretty Little Head”, “Move Over Busker” and “Angry” are album tracks, nothing offensive, but not memorable…

Paul McCartney However Absurd

“However Absurd”

The final song on the album is a bit of “Beatles” whimsy circa “Magical Mystery Tour”, a catchy song that finishes in a orchestrated crescendo that evokes “I Am The Walrus!”

Overall, “Press To Play” is an album full of catchy songs, nice production and the usual albums tracks that are fine if not memorable…

worst paul mccartney albums

The “Press To Play” Reaction!

The album came out and crashed almost immediately, peaking at number 8 in the UK, while in the US, it failed to go gold, peaking at number 30 and selling only 250,000 copies!

McCartney with Phil Collins and Pete Townsend

The Reviews Were In…

Even with Phil Collins and Pete Townsend sitting in on some songs, the reviews were unkind.

AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine admired the track “Press”, but gave the album a star rating of 2.5 out of 5, saying:

“McCartney is dabbling in each of his strengths, just to see what works. It doesn’t wind up as one of his stronger albums, but it’s more interesting than some of his more consistent ones, and those aforementioned cuts demonstrate that he could still cut effective pop records when he put his mind to it.”

However, the Los Angeles Times praised “Press” as:

“a sprightly, sunny delight – one of the most playful, positive pop songs ever written about the joy of sex and its link with love”, but finished by concluding that overall the album was “basically just another in a long line (over 12 years!) of post-‘Band on the Run’ letdowns by a once almost unimaginably creative artist.”

Paul McCartney Press To Play album review

Ouch! Is it really that big a letdown? By the way, as you can see from this re-issue, McCartney added three additional songs: “Write Away”, “It’s Not True” and “Tough On A Tightrope”, which are all nice album tracks. In general, I think “Press To Play” holds up well in the catalogue of Macca’s 80’s albums, certainly better than “Pipes Of Peace”…

Paul McCartney Press

More recently, Kit O’Toole of Blogcritics has contended that much of the album belongs among McCartney’s “most ambitious work” and that the adventurousness of the project is unfairly overlooked. O’Toole adds:

“Press to Play, along with McCartney II, arguably laid the foundation for his future musical experiments under the name The Fireman (particularly the first two albums, Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest and Rushes).”

So let’s take a amount to give “Press To Play” another listen, and appreciate that Macca kept releasing a steady stream of music, some terrific, and some just a nice friend to have around…

Here’s a look at another album that was much maligned upon release:

Great “Exorcist” Trivia!

Here is some great trivia about the film:

The refrigerated bedroom set was cooled with four air conditioners and temperatures would plunge to around 30 to 40 below zero. It was so cold that perspiration would freeze on some of the cast and crew. On one occasion the air was saturated with moisture resulting in a thin layer of snow falling on the set before the crew arrived for filming.

Oh yeah, and then there is the “head turn” sequence! As you can see in this picture, little Regan is holding a crucifix for all the wrong reasons…another scene that was so shocking that audience members fled the theaters when it was playing – this type of horror reaction just doesn’t happen any more!

This film is so intense and scary that the original teaser trailer, which consisted of nothing but images of the white-faced demon quickly flashing in and out of darkness, was banned in many theaters, as it was deemed “too frightening”.

And then of course, there is the projectile vomiting scene!

The substance that possessed Linda Blair hurls at Father Damien Karras is thick pea soup. Specifically, it’s Andersen’s brand pea soup. The crew tried Campbell’s but didn’t like the “effect.”

Yes, the plot of this film is simple: sorority babes worship an Imp that grants deadly wishes. And it had this classic line:

Well, it’s all true, and unbelievable! The Disney quote is how HITFIX describes the madness of the obscure 1981 film “Roar!”

During filming in 1977, Melanie Griffith was mauled by a lion and required plastic surgery! Griffith reportedly received fifty stitches to her face. Some have called this the most expensive and dangerous home movie ever made, since Griffith was working with her Mom and Stepdad!

Great job by Drafthouse Films bringing his back!

Roar movie lion attack

Here is some amazingly dangerous trivia about “Roar”:

Tippi Hedren fractured a leg during production when an elephant bucked her off its back when she was riding on top. Moreover, also during production, Hedren was bitten on the back of her head by a lioness called Sheri. Hedren received thirty-eight stitches to the open wound.

The incident can be seen in the finished picture! Hedren is hanging to the branch of a tree when thirty-four lions run across her. The thirty-fifth lion bites at her head. Hedren’s screams and the blood seen are real. Hedren once said of being bitten by a lion:

“Let me tell you, it hurts when you’re bitten by a lion. It’s not only that you may have an open, gaping wound, plus shock, but the pressure of those enormous jaws is so strong that it hurts”.

The film’s Cinematographer Jan de Bont was mauled and scalped by a lion on the set. de Bont required over 120 stitches to sew his scalp back from where a lion had bitten his head! de Bont went on to direct a number of big hit movies like “Twister”!

Tippi Hedren once said of “ROAR”:

“Three Days Of Peace And Music” That Changed Pop Culture Forever!

It is the world’s most iconic music festival of all time: Woodstock – the 1969 concert that changed pop culture – and music – forever…

This is one of the most amazing lineups of musical Artists ever to perform at one event, and you can re-live it forever!

Woodstock music

Here’s a trailer for the newly remastered documentary film…

Woodstock crowds 1969

From the moment that hundreds of thousands of music fans clogged the roads leading to the site….to the music that was immortalized forever – like Jimi Hendrix performing the “Star-Spangled Banner”…

jimi-hendrix-at-woodstock-69

And It Didn’t Take Place At Woodstock!

That’s right! Here’s a fascinating fact: The festival organizers wanted to hold the event in the village of Woodstock in upstate New York, but they couldn’t find a location! Luckily, after losing their permits a month before the show was to happen, dairy farmer Max Yasgur agreed to allow them to have their festival on his property in the Town of Bethel, New York!

CSNY Woodstock lyrics

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young immortalized Yasgur’s Farm with their song about the event, “Woodstock.”

“Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, tell where are you going?
This he told me
Said, I’m going down to Yasgur’s Farm
Gonna join in a rock and roll band
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free”

Woodstock acid sales

And of course, one of the most memorable moments in the documentary is when it is announced from the stage that “the brown acid is bad”…you can hear it here:

The documentary is an amazing time capsule, a time of “free love”, where there were no inhibitions, and no reported acts of violence at the festival…

Finally, there is this iconic photo, which was used on the cover of the three-LP set that was released after the event:

It’s hard to imagine how peaceful this massive music festival was, considering what happened on the streets of Chicago just a year before:

The riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention were over America’s role in Vietnam, and there is a movie that captured some of that real violence – because they filmed in the midst of it!

A Starburst Sunrise!

While this looks like a spectacular image from outer space, it’s not a solar system, it’s food! Time to celebrate the molecular wizardry of Chef Ferran Adria!

Ferran-Adri--007

For years, Chef Adrià’s Spanish restaurant el Bulli was considered the world’s best – and every year, more than a million foodies waited on a list for a chance at a reservation.

What was the big deal? Well, take a look at el Bulli’s “Langoustine with Quinoa” dish:

elBulli_langoustine with quinoa

It’s almost impossible to describe what goes into a dish like this – in fact, there are multiple volumes of recipes and photos that take you inside this creative process – these books were released but el Bulli as a way to document their imagination in the kitchen:

Chef Ferran Adria El Bulli

Chef Ferran Adria El Bulli

Yes, this is “peanut ice cream covered with snow”…the molecular wizardry at el Bulli was unsurpassed….and for aspiring culinary artists, the greatest opportunity was to get a coveted apprenticeship there.

Lisa Abend Il Bulli book

The Sorcerer’s Apprentices!

New York Time’s Spain correspondent Lisa Abend was given unprecedented access to Chef Adria and the el Bulli kitchen, and she offers an intimate glimpse of life as a “stagiaire” — a cook who agrees to work for almost nothing for a season as one of Chef Adrià’s apprentices.

El-Bulli-memoir

This is a terrific inside look at the creation of molecular food, and what it means to be a “stagiaire” – a grueling job that gets you inside the kitchen, but you never get to taste the food!

The Sorcerer's Apprentices

That’s right – the apprentices NEVER taste the food they are preparing – it’s just one of the many fascinating insights into working at el Bulli – but it was also one of the most coveted jobs in the world…this book is a terrific inside look at life in a kitchen, where even in the best restaurant in the world, the job is a mix of the monotonous and the magic…

El Bulli Kitchen

After closing el Bulli to the public, Chef Adria has focused on a different culinary adventure, which the New York Times captured in a story earlier this year – read all his new culinary laboratory here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/04/business/ferran-adria-the-former-el-bulli-chef-is-now-serving-up-creative-inquiry.html?_r=0

If you love books about food, this memoir is for you…and an apprenticeship at el Bulli was the ticket to success for many Chefs, including Carles Abelian, who worked for Chef Adria for 9 years and now has his own Michelin-starred restaurant in Barcelona!

Yes, this is a picture of the pot soup we were served – Chef Grant Achatz worked for a brief time at el Bulli – an opportunity to learn from the master, and he wrote about it in his memoir:

The Musical Path Of Todd Rundgren!

OK, you all know that I am a fan of Todd Rundgren – and you should be too! Here is Todd circa 1974, from the cover of his brilliant double album “Todd”, which included “A Dream Goes On Forever”, “The Last Ride” and “Don’t You Ever Learn?” among many others:

Todd Rundgren TODD

And here is Todd, circa 1993…and as you will see, Todd was seeking a new musical direction along with a radically different look – and NAME!

Todd Rundgren 90's music

Introducing “TR-i” – Todd’s Musical Journey Into The 90’s!

Fans of Todd Rundgren have followed this prolific Artist on an amazing – and artistically varied musical path…

Todd Rundgren Something Anything

Todd’s changed his look along with his musical direction – from the golden era of the 70’s, which included such masterpieces as “Something/Anything”, “Todd” and “Hermit Of Mink Hollow” – to the 80’s, which had such classics as “Healing” and “Acapella” – before ending the decade with his masterpiece “Nearly Human.”

todd-rundgren_nearly-human

In late 1989, Todd was given a special honor – his handprints in the “Rock Walk” on Sunset Strip…

Todd Rundgren award ceremony

You can see the coverage I provided of the event on the Movietime Channel – along with a couple of great soundbites from an interview I conducted with him…

http://johnrieber.com/2014/12/17/todd-rundgrens-rare-1990-walk-of-fame-ceremony-todds-live-on-letterman/

It was at this point that the 1990’s beckoned, a time of huge changes in interactivity and computer-generated music, and of course, Todd jumped in with both feet!

Todd Rundgren live 90's

Introducing “TR-i!”

In the 90’s, Todd went into another experimental phase of his music career, embracing the internet and looking for new forms of artistic expression, including rap! That included a new name!

As a result, some of that music wasn’t the type of Todd music that would produce hit singles.

However, looking at this music reveals of wealth of classic Todd material – he was and always is, after all, “The Individualist.”

Todd Rundgren TR-i No World Order

TR-I – “No World Order” – 1993

Rundgren entered the 90’s in a technological mood, and began recording under the pseudonym “TR-i” (“Todd Rundgren interactive”) – embracing the internet both in the studio and on many tours as well…

Todd Rundgren tour

1993’s album “No World Order” consisted of hundreds of seconds-long snippets of music, that could be combined in various ways to suit the listener – if you interfaced with the music. Todd targeted this album for the Philips CD-i platform, so fans could manipulate his music to suit their own creative taste! “No World Order” featured interactive controls for tempo, mood, and other parameters, along with pre-programmed mixes by Rundgren himself!

Here’s a great live version of the title track, “No World Order” from Todd’s 2013 tour in Amsterdam!

No World Order Lite

Yes, Todd was rapping early!

Todd also released a “lite” version of the album, removing the interactivity and making the music more streamlined.

He also put on an amazing interactive concert at the time:

Todd Live in Cyberia video

“Live In Cyberia!”

As a member of his PatroNet music service in the 90’s, I received an autographed VHS of his “Cyberia” concert – read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/06/09/todd-rundgren-goes-to-cyberia-behold-the-futuristic-interactive-todd-pod/

Next up was another TR-i album:

Todd Rundgren The Individualist

“The Individualist” – 1995

“The Individualist” featured interactive video content that could be viewed or played; giving the listener a chance to play a game with the music….and the music, while still techno and rap-driven, was also more mainstream as well…

Here is Todd performing “The Individualist” from Cleveland in 1997:

“The Individualist” contains one of Todd’s best – and most obscure – songs, the catchy pop majesty of “Espresso (All Jacked Up)” – read all about it – and see a great music video – by clicking here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/12/16/todd-rundgrens-hidden-gems-espresso-umbrellas-todds-secret-songs/

Doesn’t that make you “all jacked up?”

Todd_Rundgren_-_With_A_Twist...

After going interactive, Todd decided to have some fun with his old songs and give them “a twist”:

Todd Rundgren bossa nova music

“With A Twist” – 1997

In the true spirit of be eclectic and adventurous, “With a Twist…” is a 1997 album by Todd that turned some of his most popular songs on their head. Asked to produce an album of new versions of his older singles, Rundgren decided to record the songs in “Bossa Nova” style!

Here’s Todd performing his Bossa Nova version of “I Saw The Light” on Conan O’Brien’s talk show in 1997:

Yes, that’s his good buddy Kasim Sultan on guitar and backing vocals! As current Todd fans know, he isn’t satisfied just singing the same hit song over and over again, and this is a great example of how he can interpret his music in new and creative ways…

Todd Rundgren One Long Year

“One Long Year” – 2000

Todd ended the 1990’s by taking a collection of his PatroNet work and releasing it as an album. PatroNet was Todd’s subscription service over the internet, and so fans had gotten these songs over several years, but it was released in 2000 as “One Long Year”.

One of the hidden gems on this album was “Where Does The Time Go” – a classic Todd pop hit that is seen here from the “Hermits of Mink Halloween” at RundgrenRadio’s PaRRty in IKRON:

TR-bobblehead

For some, the 90’s were a musical departure for Todd that wasn’t as satisfying for them – but as you can see, Todd was on a musical journey, and there is a decade worth of adventurous, creative work that deserves to be heard…just as in the 80’s, when Todd mastered the “power pop” song:

Power Pop!

Todd and Utopia had a slew of great pop songs, and you can read all about them by clicking on my story here:

Fans of classic rock icons, have I got a treat for you!

janis-joplin-free-when-she-sang

It’s time to celebrate one of music’s greatest talents – the legendary Janis Joplin!

First, listen to this amazing rendition of “Little Girl Blue” on Tom Jones’s TV show from 1969!

Janis_Joplin_Tom_Jones_1969

Janis Joplin was one of music’s greatest singers, and as part of the 60’s counter-culture revolution, she became a star at the same time as Jimi Hendrix…and now, the true story of her life is coming to theaters!

Janis 1-Sheet final.indd

Director Amy Berg’s documentary about the groundbreaking rock singer, “Janis: Little Girl Blue”, follows Janis Joplin’s humble beginnings in conservative East Texas through her rise to fame with Big Brother and the Holding Company following their triumph at Monterey Pop, and her descent into drugs and booze.

Here is the trailer:

Janis-Joplin

The film tells the entire story, including interviews with her parents, sister, brother, and many of the musicians she performed with.

Me and Bobby McGee Janis Joplin Kris Kristofferson

The Brilliant “Me And Bobby McGee”!

Joplin’s most famous song was “Me And Bobby McGee”, which was written by singer/songwriter/actor Kris Kristofferson, who is also interviewed in the movie…

best Janis Joplin music

Janis died on October 4, 1970 in a Hollywood motel – an accidental heroin overdose at age 27 — only two weeks after another rock legend, Jimi Hendrix, also died at age 27.

Finally, Jim Morrison of The Doors died at the age of 27 as well, which has become one of rock music’s strangest coincidences…

Janis Joplin Pearl

This terrific documentary brings her talent and beauty back to life: it tells the story of her growing up in the north Texas town of Port Arthur, to her rise to stardom as the lead singer of the 60’s acid/rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company:

Once Janis went solo, there was no stopping her, except for the personal demons that haunted her, and the excess of rock music at the time…but she was an amazing performer…here is her rendition of “Piece Of My Heart” from a German TV show in 1968:

Janis Rocks Woodstock!

Here’s an anecdote about Joplin’s performance at Woodstock: faced with a ten-hour wait after arriving at the backstage area, she allegedly partied with lots of drugs and alcohol…

Janis Joplin Woodstock drinking

By the time she hit the stage, she was “three sheets to the wind”. Pete Townshend, who performed with The Who later in the same morning after Joplin finished, witnessed her performance and said the following in his 2012 memoir: “She had been amazing at Monterey, but tonight she wasn’t at her best, due, probably, to the long delay, and probably, too, to the amount of booze and heroin she’d consumed while she waited. But even Janis on an off-night was incredible.”.

Of course, the story of Janis Joplin has a tragic ending, but this movie looks at her incredible talent, and that’s the best way to remember her….

It reminded me of a great music documentary I own:

One other Joplin anecdote involves one of my favorite singers, Laura Nyro:

Joplin apparently was jealous of her, and said mean things about Nyro to legendary Music Mogul Clive Davis:

It’s probably Barcelona’s most famous park, located in a neighborhood at the edge of Barcelona’s central tourist area – an incredible wonderland of art and architecture like this:

As you can see from this watery art, not all of the art in Barcelona is housed in buildings: for example, if you wander along Barcelona’s waterfront, you will see this tasty artwork:

Tasty Art!

Food as art is everywhere as well, and you will also find this type of food art – hanging Iberico hams!

That’s because Barcelona has some of the world’s best food – including their legendary Spanish Tapas!

John Rieber Deep-Fried Turkey

deep fried turkey recipes 2015

Time To “Deep Fry” Your Thanksgiving!

If you are looking for a different approach to your Thanksgiving Turkey, here are two delicious ways to make your birds!

Here is a tease:

bacon wrapped turkey recipe

Wrapped Up In Bacon Love!

Yes, I tossed a bit of “bacon porn” in to entice you, but it’s a recipe I actually use and love! You need to stay with me as I walk you through two incredible Turkey preparations!

John Rieber Thanksgiving 2015 Recipes

First, Wake Up VERY Early…

It all begins on Thanksgiving morning – very early. There is no real prep work you can do except buy your Turkey in time to have it completely thawed on Thanksgiving morning – the rest of the recipe gets done from scratch, beginning with an early morning shopping trip for a variety of items that will be used on the birds.

Bacon-wrapped Turkey recipe

Get Your First Bird Ready To Go!

First, take your thawed Turkey…we used a 14-pounder, which worked well….clean it out – setting aside the gizzard and neck for gravy stock of course! Pat your Turkey dry, salt and pepper the inside and then slather – and I mean SLATHER – the whole bird in butter…

Herbed Turkey butter

butter roasted Turkey

I use a variety of fresh herbs like Rosemary and Sage, chopped up and integrated into the butter as I rub it on…and then you want to grab your best friend in the world…BACON!

Show The Bacon Love!

How easy is this? Decorate your Turkey with bacon! It will stick nicely to the butter, is easy to maneuver around the drumsticks and wings, and looks great when you are finished!

Time To Stick This Bird In The Oven!

For me, Turkeys are incredibly easy to make. You can always find great recipes and cooking guidelines online and in a wide variety of cookbooks and magazines, but I cook my 14-pounder for 3-1/2 hours at 325 degrees.

Of course, you will use a thermometer to check the internal temperature, and I let the bird rest for 20-30 minutes when done.

That is, of course, assuming you even USE an oven!

Time To Play Doctor!

Here’s a bird that never sees the inside of an oven! You begin this operation with a massive syringe, which is filled with tasty goodness! First of all, my wife Alex coated a ten-pound Turkey with cajun spices, and then she injected the Turkey with some liquid cajun sauce!

cajun Turkey recipes

Time To Deep Fry!

Guess what? Prep is done! Now all you need is an outdoor deep fryer designed for Turkeys! It is recommended that you heat your oil to 350 degrees and cook the Turkey 3-4 minutes per pound – and of course, you MUST BEGIN WITH A FULLY THAWED BIRD!

Thanksgiving 2015 Turkey deep fryer

Here’s a terrific Turkey deep fryer, which I loaded up with peanut oil as directed and then heated it up…when it was ready, it was time to lower the bird!

My New Thanksgiving Tradition!

Yes, my new Thanksgiving treat is “White Castle Stuffing”, and before you judge, know that it is delicious!

The Traveling Wilburys George Harrison Bob Dylan Tom Petty Jeff Lynne Roy Orbison

What A Supergroup! George Harrison! Bob Dylan! Tom Petty! Roy Orbison! Jeff Lynne!

Time to remember the greatness of The Traveling Wilburys! This strangely forgotten footnote in music was actually a terrific celebration of music, a band consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty!

traveling-wilburys-music

Behold The Majesty Of The Wilburys!

Let’s get right to it: this group got together for a brief time in the early 90’s and released some really great music!

Here is the catchy “Handle With Care”, which could have come off of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” CD..and featuring the legendary Roy Orbison!

Traveling Wilbury logo

The Origin Of The Wilburys!

SO here is the story of how this incredible lineup of musicians got together!

In February 1988, George Harrison was promoting his solo album “Cloud Nine” – and was asked what was next…well, Jeff Lynne had just produced the record, so Harrison said cheekily:

George Harrison Cloud Nine

“What I’d really like to do next is… to do an album with me and some of my mates… a few tunes, you know. Maybe The Traveling Wilburys… it’s this new group I got: it’s called the Traveling Wilburys, I’d like to do an album with them and later we can all do our own albums again.”

And what a group it was!

travelling-wilburys-music

The “Secret” Story Of The Traveling Wilburys!

So who are these “Wilburys” anyway? Well, according to wikipedia, “Wilbury” was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of “Cloud Nine” with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, “We’ll bury ’em in the mix”.

best rock supergroups

“We’ll Bury ’em” Indeed!

From then on, they used the term for any mistakes during the recording, and the band was born!

WILBURYS photo

As you saw from that first video, this was a group that just loved playing music tougher, so they originally got together to record a “b-side” for one of Harrison’s singles.

best traveling wilburys music

The resulting song, “Handle With Care”, was so good they decided to do an entire album!

Here is the terrific “End Of The Line” video, also from the first album:

traveling-wilburys-baby

Roy Orbison died shortly after the album was done, so that video pays tribute to him…and the remaining members recorded a followup album, called – with that same wicked sense of humor – “Vol. 3”!

wilburys vol. 3

The “Wilbury Twist” with John Candy!

While the death of Orbison was certainly sad, the group released another terrific collection of music, including the “Wilbury Twist” starring John Candy!

best rock supergroups

Once again, the pure joy these guys had making music was refreshing, and the songs were catchy and fun, including the funky rocker “She’s My Baby”:

The Wilburys only released two albums, but of course Jeff Lynne has kept making music, including releasing a new Electric Light Orchestra CD!

If you are interested in fascinating, but disturbing documentaries, here is an Artist you should know…

best documentaries of all time

“Hard manual labor is visible, explainable, portrayable.
This is why I often think of it as the only real work.”

Documentary filmmaker Michael Glawogger was an Austrian film director, screenwriter and cinematographer. He specialized in showing people on the edges of society…

best prostitution documentary

The subjects of his movies were real people – the stories were harsh, poignant and unflinching. He made three documentaries, two of which I have seen and wanted to share with you – because he was a brilliant film maker…

Workingmans_death

“Workingman’s Death”

I read about this film and had to see it – in a world when TV shows talk about “dangerous jobs” or “dirty jobs”, this film takes that definition to a whole new level…

WorkingmansDeath best documentary

Glawogger films six different jobs that are beyond anything you can imagine – intimate portraits of real men doing the most dangerous jobs on earth – here is the trailer:

best documentaries

The film is broken into six chapters, each one highlighting another job – beginning with:

Coal mines in the Ukraine

Here is how the film’s website describes this job: A “mousetrap” is a mine no higher than 16 inches that the coal diggers have excavated themselves. Do you understand? The entire height of the mine that these men work inside is 16 inches!

most dangerous jobs in the world

The miners have to crawl for over 200 yards while lying almost completely flat, then pound the coal into pieces, and shovel these pieces into a metal trough – and all that while lying flat on their stomachs.

best documentaries of all time

This is unbelievably harrowing – just over a foot of space to drag themselves more than the length of two football fields! Director Glawogger’s camera is there to capture all of it…

workingmans-death documentary

Sulfar Mining in Indonesia

How about this job? The “kitchen” is the place at the edge of the hot, blue-green lake at the bottom of the crater where sulfur is mined. The “kitchen” spits, hisses, billows up in clouds of hot caustic vapor.

WorkingmansDeath best documentary

Here molten sulfur flows through long clay pipes, touches the air, and hardens in a matter of minutes. Orange puddles turn into pale-yellow, jagged-edged chunks and slabs.

WorkingManDeath

Equipped with long iron rods, the men stuff a cloth or the sleeve of their jackets into their mouths, and dash up the slope and into the biting fumes. There they break off big chunks of hardened sulfur to carry away for sale.

worst jobs in the world

Slaughter Yard in Nigeria

Forget buying steaks in a supermarket. Here is how they do it in Nigeria: a real slaughterhouse, functioning like an open-air market, because it is…

workingmans-death

This is “The Slab,” a large open-air clearing where the cattle is brought alive, then slaughtered, skinned, and cut into portions for sale. There is a charred elevated platform for roasting the beef heads, skin, feet, and whole goats.

Nigerian slaughterhouse

One of the Director’s great techniques is to place a subject in front of the place they work, and then let the camera roll. The awkwardness is clear, real and touching…

cargo ships dismantled

Next up is one of the most beautifully filmed – and dangerous – jobs of all: workers in Pakistan who live in shacks and literally dismantle old cargo ships…

wmd-shipyard

Shipbreaking in Pakistan

Shamorgar, a little Pakistani mountain village near the border to Afghanistan, is where the old cargo ships are run aground and then taken apart – an amazingly dangerous and toxic environment…

China factory life

Steel Complex in China

Muscle power and the contribution of the individual are no longer prized as they were in former times. The model heroes of the past, like Mang Tai or Wang Xinxi, are still looked upon as exemplary workers, but whatever charisma they once had no longer seems relevant anymore.

This is a sad look at how men who used their strength in the past have no role in the future, leading to the last vignette:

great documentaries

Leisure Park in Germany

When night falls in Duisburg, the blast furnaces flare up. In neon green and fantastic colors. ARTificial light – In the truest sense. The British light artist Jonathan guides Duisburgians home with this spectacular installation. Visitors to this abandoned steel mill experience the glowing furnaces live and in color – and as the film’s website asks: “Now do you see the light”?

And that is the real point of the documentary.

Michael-Glawogger

Here is how the Director describe it:

“Work can be many things. Often it is barely visible; sometimes,
difficult to explain;and in many cases, impossible to portray.
Hard manual labor is visible, explainable, portrayable.
This is why I often think of it as the only real work.”

Michael Glawogger

Read more about this incredible documentary here:

http://www.workingmansdeath.at/about_en.html

Glawogger then turned his cameras on what is referred to as “the world’s oldest profession”:

Whores' Glory

Whores’ Glory:

First, look at the trailer:

Glawogger turned his camera on the lives, troubles and hopes of prostitutes in Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico.

Whores-Glory-movie

In Bangkok, the camera unflinchingly shows you the bars where women sit behind glass and wait for men to pick their “number”:

prostitution documentary

You hear from he women who work here, and get a honest sense of what their life is like. What is shocking is to see how prostitution is a way of life in Bangladesh as well:

bangladesh_prostitutes

Finally, the Director heads to Mexico, and a rough border town where the women are all strung out on drugs, and some of the “johns” ride in on mules to see them:

movies about prostitution

This movie becomes graphic near the end, when a customer is filmed procuring services from a prostitute in Mexico – who then heads back to her room with her female lover, who sprawls naked on a bed and smokes crack. It is sobering material.

whores-glory-prostitution

The Director’s Tragic Death!

Tragically, Director Michael Glawogger died while on location for a film. 4 days after incorrectly being diagnosed with typhus, he died in 2014 on location in Liberia…

What he has left are two brilliant films….classic cimema verite – there is no narration in these films: you hear from the people profiled as they work – and talk about their work…it is storytelling as its most fundamental – and brilliant: check them out!

In The Mood For A Movie?

Nothing more enjoyable than finding a seat and experiencing some memorable cinema…and if you want it to be VERY MEMORABLE, then take a walk down this street!

new york grindhouse

In the 70’s and the early part of the 80’s, New York’s time square was filled with “grind houses”, movie theaters that churned out exploitation movies to young men seeking a cheap thrill…I find this era fascinating because these theaters were filled with movies that catered to young, impressionable men who could be lured into the theater by ads like these…

Christina Lindberg naked

Films like “Exposed” promised to do just that – and savvy movie Producers made a lot of money by catering to every young man’s fantasy, especially when it came to Cheerleaders…

naked cheerleaders

Rah! Rah! Rah!

X-rated films about Cheerleaders offered plenty of nudity, and laughs as well, as the movies made as much fun of themselves as they did of the audience who watched them…

Yes, even David Hasselhoff appeared in these movies…you can read my story about these films – and “the Hoff” – by clicking here…

Another sub-culture of film that was hugely popular in the 70’s and 80’s dealt with another group of young women who had no problem making you feel better…

use sex film Student nurses

The Student Nurses – “They’re Learning Fast!”

Yes, let’s look at some of the most entertaining sexploitation movies that focused on nurses…whether they were in school “learning fast”, or doing a little extra “private duty”…

private duty nurses

Private Duty Nurses – “It’s What They Do OFF Duty That’s Really Private!”

As you can see, these movies promised lots of sex – these movie posters are hilariously obvious – but they worked!

nude Young Nurses

The Young Nurses – “It’s My Body, Doctor – NOT Your Laboratory!”

These posters are obvious: the movie promises sex, nudity and more sex!

Check out this classic trailer:

In the 70’s, drive-in movies were the rage, and guys could pile into a car and watch a double or even triple-features, all about nurses!

sex Candy Stripe Nurses

Candy Stripe Nurses! – “They’ll Give You Fast-Fast-Fast Relief!”

The movies may have seemed very similar, but who cares? Here is the decidedly NSFW trailer:

Of course, you can only be in nursing school, or in a hospital for so long, so what do you do? Add violence!

I love this movie, which includes a nurse with a machine gun!

Nurses ForSale

Nurses For Sale – “Kidnapped, Abused & Tormented – Held For The Highest Price!”

So if you can’t watch them work, then watch them fight back against kidnappers! This genre of film became so popular that everyone jumped on the bandwagon!

Our friends at Troma got into the action by releasing this classic exploitation film from Hungary!

Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy! Troma

“Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy”!

Troma is America’s longest lasting independent film studio – in large part because they have a great sense of humor when it comes to film.

Here is Troma’s hilariously profane trailer!

Along with grind house theaters, the “sexy nurse” phenomenon faded away, but for more than a decade, they were some of the most successful low-budget movies released…

And just this year, a new nurse horror film was released – in 3D!

nurse-3d

You can find this on demand and on home video – check out “Nurse 3D!”

Cheerleaders and nurses weren’t the only ones exploited…during the height of the “grind house” cinema phases, even hillbillies got a chance to shine as well!

Looking For A Great Book?

It can be daunting to stare down stacks and stacks – er, I mean page after page of online choices…so here are five terrific books to give as holiday gifts!

eves-hollywood-eve-babitz

“Eve’s Hollywood!”

In the swinging 60’s and 70’s of Hollywood’s music scene, Eve Babitz was described as “bubbly, busty, and brainy!” She was the child of bohemian parents, and was raised on high culture and schooled on rock and roll!

eves-hollywood-eve-babitz

She called the Troubadour club and the Chateau Marmot on LA’s infamous Sunset Strip her home, and she was intimately involved with Jim Morrison – plus, she was a great artist, creating album covers for rock bands, like this one for Buffalo Springfield.

Babitz achieved the most notoriety in the 60’s, however, for this scandalous photo!

Eve Babitz nude portrait

“Naked Chess!”

In 1963, at the age of 20, she played chess with Marcel Duchamp — naked — at the Pasadena Art Museum, an occasion that was immortalized by the photographer Julian Wasser…

Eve’s memoir is a fascinating look at Hollywood in the 70’s…here is one of her beautifully written lines from the book:

“But when I hear that liar’s chocolate voice I am, each time, thrown into a confusion of the night he came in alone from the stars.”

best holiday gift ideas

As Amazon describes it, Eve’s memoir is “an album of vivid snapshots of Southern California’s haute bohemians, of outrageously beautiful high-school ingenues and enviably tattooed Chicanas, of rock stars sleeping it off at the Chateau Marmont.”

Eve’s candid memoir is a tale of sex and excess on Sunset Strip, at the height of the era of free love and rock ‘n’ roll…

McCartney’s “Secret” Masterpiece!

Based on these photos, Paul McCartney was in a playful mood when he returned to his solo career in 1980 – after many years recording with his band Wings – and from these recording sessions he created what has become one his most acclaimed albums – even though it was trashed by critics – AND SOME FANS – when released!

mccartney_ii_special edition

Time To Spin The Brilliant “McCartney II!”

Even though it was released a decade after the breakup of The Beatles, “McCartney II” is only the second solo album by Paul McCartney, and the first since the formation of Wings in 1971!

Paul McCartney

Remember that “RAM” is credited to Paul AND Linda McCartney, so even though it was his second solo album, it’s not considered that…which brings us to “McCartney II!”

mccartney_ii_special edition

The final Wings CD was a commercial and critical failure – even thought it has also emerged as a neglected gem as well:

After Wings broke up, Macca went back into the studio for a very experimental album, a significant departure for McCartney. Much of “McCartney II” utilizes synthesizers and studio experimentation.

It all began when McCartney went north to his farm in Scotland to begin some private recordings in July 1979. The first song he recorded was “Check My Machine” as a way to test the equipment, hence its title. By sessions’ end, he had recorded over 20 songs!

This classic Linda McCartney photo of Paul at works shows just how experimental Macca had become, showing once again how committed he was to music, and his willingness to try anything!

With no immediate use for the recordings, he put them aside – and only released one song – just in time for the holiday season 1979…

Paul released his first solo single since 1971 – the holiday hit “Wonderful Christmastime”, which was recorded during those “McCartney II” recording sessions.

Here is the fun music video Macca released at the time:

McCartney 2 recordings

As for the rest of the songs, “McCartney II” was released the following May to very mixed reviews; many critics found the album, with its experimental, synth-based compositions and its handful of instrumentals, slight and unlike McCartney’s classic rock of the “Band On The Run” era…

But it was just what the fans wanted at the time, and the album hit number 1 in the UK and number 3 in the US.

The driver of the albums’s success was one of McCarney’s most unique singles ever!

The song was was a #2 hit in England – and it was released with the reverse side a live version recorded during Wings’ December 1979 show in Glasgow…

“Coming Up” was flipped over for the live Wings version in the US where it became another No. 1 for McCartney, and helped launch the album’s success around the world!

Here is Paul McCartney performing “Coming Up” in “The Concert for Kampuchea”, held in London in 1979.

The other song that achieved great notoriety from the album also highlighted McCartney’s experimental phase at the time:

Paul McCartney Temporary Secretary

“Temporary Secretary”

This computerized, synthesized beat was unique, putting McCartney at the forefront of the 80’s new wave sound! Here is Paul still performing the song today, live from London is 2015:

Thanks to “FAB GEAR FAVE RAVE” for posting this on youtube! These first two songs set the stage for a great collection of McCartney songs, from the bluesy “On the Way” to the absolutely gorgeous ballad “Waterfalls”:

Next up was the funky, 50’s sound of “Nobody Knows”, then more experimental songs like
“Front Parlour”, “Summer’s Day Song”, “Frozen Jap”, “Bogey Music”, “Darkroom”, and ending with the beautiful “One of These Days”:

Thanks to MetalGuruMessiah for that very inventive music video honoring the song, which I found on youtube!

classic Paul McCartney II

As you can see from these photos, Paul was in quite the experimental mood, perhaps feeling freed from having to keep the band Wings going forward….instead, he let his inhibitions go, and released a masterpiece!

“The Record Is Muddled And Confused!”

Or did he?

The initial reviews were mixed, with many criticizing McCartney for the experimental nature of the album. Yet time has, once again, given fans a chance to embrace the unique sound and classic McCartney songwriting.

Cinema’s Strangest Movie Titles! Sex! Witches! Dustin Hoffman! Slimeballs Too!

One of the most difficult aspects of making a film is deciding what to call it – after all, lots of us go see a film based on the title!

Jaws-movie-poster

Sure, “Jaws” pretty much nailed it…big shark, “JAWS”…I’m in…and when a movie has a distinctive, iconic title, there’s not much more you need to worry about…here are more examples of films where the titles pretty much told you all you need to know…

The Exorcist movie

working girl movie

bloodthirsty butchers

Yes, THAT film title explains exactly what you are about to see as well! And in that vein of “this film MUST be as bad as it sounds”, I offer you this movie title:

i-could-never-have-sex-with-any-man-who-has-so-little-movie-poster-1973

“I Could Never Have Sex With Any Man Who Has Such Little Respect For My Husband!”

First of all, what was the year 1973 thinking when it released this movie to the world?

That said, it’s not only a very accurate description of the film, but one of the strangest movie titles of all time!

In this sex farce, a couple of aspiring swingers rent a summer cottage in Martha’s Vineyard. There they sit around discussing the pros and cons of having affairs!

Of course they do!

i-could-never-have-sex-with-any-man-who-has-so-little-movie-poster-1973

This was an actual movie that was released in theaters…and here’s another wacky movie title that shares the same distinction!

Psyched By The 4D Witch!

“Psyched By The 4D Witch”!

Yes, it’s not only one of the strangest movie titles ever, but it was theatrically released as well! The early 70’s were obviously a gold mine for wacky!

worst films of all time 4D Witch

I probably don’t have to tell you this, but “Psyched By The 4D Witch” is one of the worst films of all time…read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/10/06/manos-hands-of-fate-is-here-halloween-2015-celebrates-horrors-worst-directors-sex-fleshpots-4d-witches/

Oh, Dustin Hoffman, REALLY?

While “4D Witch” will only be remembered by the people who made it, some of these strange movie titles had really big stars in the films – here is a great example – take a deep breath and try to get this movie title out in one sitting:

obscure dustin hoffman film harry kellerman

“Who Is Harry Kellerman And Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?”

What the? Well, this obscure 1971 film starred Dustin Hoffman as a song writer who cannot love himself, or others. So he spends his days with various women flying his plane, and dropping in to the world around him. Um, OK….

strange movie titles dustin hoffman

Dustin went on to star in some more mainstream movies with more straightforward titles of course:

x-rated midnight cowboy

Well, maybe not…you see, I wanted to share some of the funniest and most unique movie titles of all time – the films themselves may be good, bad or ugly, or in some cases, cult classics like this one!

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama

“Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama!”

This 80’s cult horror film starred Scream Queen Linnea Quigley, and was originally called “The Imp!”

Linnea Quigley The Imp

You see, a bunch of sorority sisters are trapped in a bowling alley, and are terrorized by the afore-mentioned “Imp!”

To see more of this wackiness, and to celebrate Linnea Quigley in all of her greatness, click on my story here:

Finally, there is this gem…if you think I am joking about this movie title, YOU ARE WRONG:

Incredibly strange creatures movie

“The World’s First Monster Musical!”

Yes, this is real movie! Time to embrace:

“The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!”

Watch this classic trailer for “the world’s first monster musical!”

That is, without a doubt, the most unique movie title I’ve ver heard…well, except for the others! So there you have it, five very strange movie titles…let me know which is your favorite!

Talk About A Wrong Turn!

It was Steve McQueen’s last film, and it included the most incredible car stunt Chicago has ever seen!

Time to celebrate “The Hunter!”

The Hunter Quad

Steve McQueen was one of the biggest stars of the 60’s and 70’s, with films such as “The Great Escape”, “Papillon” and the iconic action movie “Bullitt.”

Bullitt

He was also one of Hollywood’s coolest stars…McQueen was a huge car buff and race car driver as well, and his last film included Chicago’s most amazing car stunt ever!

“The Hunter” was the true story of professional bounty hunter Ralph “Papa” Thorson.

Check out the trailer:

iconic Hollywood Steve McQueen

“The Hunter” was McQueen’s last film, and sadly, it was during filming that co-workers realized something was wrong with the Actor.

According to numerous biographies and documentaries on Steve McQueen’s life, one of the first signs of problems relating to the cancer in his lungs occurred when shooting a scene in which McQueen is running down the street and turns a corner. When the director yelled, “Cut!”, McQueen didn’t come back around the corner. McQueen was found leaning against a wall trying desperately to catch his breath.

Steve McQueen was diagnosed with cancer the month after filming had ended.

Also tragic was the fact that the real Ralph Thorson, portrayed by Steve McQueen in the movie, was killed by a car bomb in 1994.

“The Hunter” is best known as the film that showed off Chicago’s iconic Marina Towers in a very special way!

Chicago Marina towers

Chicago’s Dual Corn Cobs!

Marina City includes a unique pair of apartment buildings on the Chicago River, and tenants have their cars valet parked on the lower floors of the building.

As the Chicago Tribune noted: “a car chase up Marina City towers’ parking ramp ends with a vehicle losing control on the 15th floor of the corncob-looking building and plunging into the Chicago River.

That’s right, the chase ends when the car shoots off of the 19th floor and into the Chicago river!

“It’s certainly a spectacular image people frequently associate with Chicago, it’s perhaps one of the more memorable stunts the city has done overall. Up until that point, so few big movies were made in Chicago. It helped put Chicago on the map when it comes to filmmaking.”

McQueen’s last movie isn’t one of his best, even with the amazing stunt – which has NEVER been allowed since!

MacGraw and McQueen began an affair during the filming of the movie, and ended up getting married…Evans discusses this part of his life in his terrific memoir, “The Kid Stays In The Picture.”

Oh Sally!

Sally Struthers has a deliciously wacky small role in the film, as the wife of a mild-mannered Dentist! They are both kidnapped by a ruthless thug out to find McQueen…
